Fundamental Research

The ophthalmology department of the Creteil is involved in genetic research and it is essentially based on the genetic aspects of Age-related Macular Degeneration and macular and retinal dystrophies.

The first genetic polymorphism involved in AMD (Apo-E gene) was identified and highlighted by our staff in 1998. Since 2005 we have found many other genetic polymorphisms involved in AMD (CFH, ARMS2, SCARB1 genes…).

The coexistence between clinical and genetics skills has led to the first described correlations between genotype and phenotype in AMD.

Concerning retinal and macular dystrophies, a similar approach (correlation between phenotype and genotype) has been implemented for several years in collaboration with several teams INSERM (Dr J. Kaplan, Dr P. Benlian…).
